Pick of the Week
This Satirical Thriller
The filmmaker's unflinching critique tackles the oppressive nature of women's appearance and the perceived horrors of ageing. The veteran actress presents a masterful portrayal in the role of Elisabeth, a mature actress forced into hosting an aerobics show on the small screen. Edged out thanks to her slimy boss Harvey, she seeks out a secretive and horrifying treatment titled "The Substance". This generates a youthful duplicate named Sue, culminating in an increasingly vampiric relationship among both women. This Friday, the streaming service Paramount+
The Woman in Cabin 10 Film
This Agatha Christie-esque story features Knightley in the role of Laura, a top-notch writer who decides to take some time off from covering international wars to join an opulent ship accompanied by a gravely sick Norwegian shipping heiress and donor, her husband, as well as other extremely wealthy passengers. Yet once an enigmatic female goes overboard during the evening and all passengers insists she wasn't real, the reporter's sleuthing skills awaken. Out now, Netflix
Presence
Soderbergh pushes his directorial skills through this nifty supernatural story shot entirely through the eyes of a ghost. As a family with Lucy Liu as Rebekah and her distressed teen Chloe moves into their new suburban house, the lens – as the unseen entity – shadows their actions. The daughter appears aware of the poltergeist, and it seems defensive toward her. However, the motive remains? The premise is enjoyable that avoids overstaying, featuring a surprise that could catch you off guard. This Saturday, 4.35pm, 10.10pm, the Sky channel
Nicolas Cage's Meta Comedy
Cage embraces his unique fame via this self-referential adventure. Hired by the CIA to investigate the suspected cartel boss, Cage's unconventional method proves useful. Saturday 11 October, evening, Channel 4
The Black Phone
Derrickson's claustrophobic thriller stands strong without requiring a sequel. Taking place in the late 70s in Denver, a series of child abductions has rendered the youth on edge. After Finney is kidnapped by the kidnapper and held captive in a cellar, he fears a terrible outcome. But the non-functional line mounted nearby continues to ring, with ghostly voices offering help, while the intuitive nightmares of his sister Gwen may be his salvation. A solid creepfest. This Saturday, 10.50pm, on Film4
The Tammy Faye Biopic
In the conflict between faith and wealth, it's a knockout win for greed in Michael Showalter's wonderfully garish true story about the fallen religious broadcaster plus her lawbreaking partner. Andrew Garfield acts as the corrupt Bakker, who proclaims initially, “God does not want us to be poor,”. He and Tammy Faye commence capitalizing on the American public's spiritual convictions. It's an extravaganza of poor styling, overdone appearance and bad faith, yet Chastain achieves to show Tammy Faye in a likable light. Tuesday 14 October, 1.15am, on Film4
The Spy Mystery
The current week's additional entry by the same director is a intelligence thriller as precise similar to the collars used by the actor's UK spy. The two stars are experts of calm composure, so a delicious mental battle of deception or honesty unfolds.
