Patients Discontinuing Weight-Loss Medications Put On Weight Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that people who come off new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional lifestyle plans.

Published data in a leading medical journal shows that while overweight people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People purchasing these drugs must be aware of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a return to starting mass in about 18 months.

Weighing Approaches

The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.

Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually have a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the way of the injections accounts for the heightened regain.

GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."

A Chronic Condition?

Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians contend that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.

This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

Users who have come off the jabs explain a intense resurgence of cravings.

"It was like a switch activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," said one woman.

The struggle is worsened if individuals have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers emphasize that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated lifestyle changes.
